Four Things Worship Leaders Should Do In September

There are seasons for everything, and in the thick of the back-to-school fall mode, it’s easy for small but essential things to get swept away in details.

Here are four easy things you can do this week to reap great benefits for you and your team in the next few months!

Declutter Your Space(s)

No matter how organized you may be backstage, it’s always good to take a critical look and see what you can part with to save space and keep things neat and tidy. A great backstage area has many benefits, including 1) the psychological benefit for people showing up to your worship ministry, 2) the efficiency and effectiveness of stage setup and finding the right equipment at the right time, and 3) the sense of hospitality and pride for your team members.

The high traffic of worship prep areas tends to become a little bit messy—storage of unused drums or other equipment, wrongly placed cables on hooks or cabinets, or any number of different things.

Depending on the severity of your decluttering needs, you could choose a day and gather a small team to help you make a dent in your backstage/tech area. Or you could take 20 minutes to spruce things up a bit.

Other places that need to be decluttered include your office, desk, guitar case, car, or the soundboard console area/tech booth.

Plan Your Christmas Party Date

It might seem a little far off to you right now, but putting a plan on the calendar for a Christmas party date can be an essential part of building community and celebrating with your team. Christmas is a busy time for the worship ministry department in any church, so you might even opt to schedule a special community event in the first couple weeks of January to make it easier on the schedule. However, there is something significant about getting together at Christmas time, and here are a couple of ways that I’ve seen it done and experienced in our ministry:

  1. — Host a party for the worship and tech team at the church building and invite one or two people to plan the meal and the activities.
  2. — Have an open house in your home for three or four hours on a Sunday afternoon. Invite your worship team members to stop by, have some food, and say thanks.
  3. — Give your worship team a five-dollar gift card for a cup of coffee and a special note for each one that tells them how much you appreciate their part in serving with you this year.
  4. — Plan a Christmas party at a local restaurant, and pay out of your budget if you can.

Recruit Some New Folks For Your Next Community / Training Night

Take a few minutes to brainstorm some people in your church whom you may like to invite to begin serving with you in ministry. Fall is an excellent time to invite new people in, and it would be easy to ask them to your next training or community night so they can meet with others in the group.

You can invite people who may want to serve in areas where you currently need reinforcements, like camera operators, computer operators, graphic operators, lighting, or sound. But you may also have somebody in mind who you’ve been thinking about inviting to participate in music leadership, and now is an excellent time to reach out and invite them in so they can get plugged in and acclimated for this new year.

Send a personalized email, text or handwritten note to invite people to consider joining you in ministry.

Get A Training Event Or Conference On Your Calendar

A worship conference or a training event can do wonders for your soul and ministry and help grow your volunteers. If possible, invite a couple of volunteers to join you for a conference or training event; half of the fruit will come from just traveling to and from the event.

Now is a good time to Google some possible worship leader conferences, look for one that might be in the spring, include it in your budget for next year, and get it on the calendar.

Conferences don’t have to be specifically for worship leaders. Any number of spiritual growth and leadership conferences can make a big difference in your refreshment and new ideas.

Another idea for training may be to invite someone to your church to share with your worship team and personalize the training! I love being a part of these times, which might look like a dinner together and some worship ministry talking – or it may be a full weekend with guest worship leadership, a meal, and a workshop. Let me know – I’d love to join you!
